Authentic Bengali Restaurant Begumpet | Hyderabad : Oh! Calcutta

Bengali food today from Oh Calcutta! Really enjoyed the fried fish with the mustard errm chutney? (name fails me :/ ). For main course, it was Rice and fish curry (again, forget the actual name..the menu book was great though, had the loveliest and most detailed descriptions for every dish. But i was way too hungry then to remember anything now). It was delicately flavored and very soupy. Not sure if that's how it's meant to be. I really liked the cauliflower & potatoes that were cooked along with the fish in the broth. Had Aam Panna & a Lychee flavored drink to go with lunch. I'm a little upset we skipped dessert, but we were so full. Next time we go I want to try Misti Doi & Payesh! #kolkata #lunch #VSCOcam #fishcurry #fishfry #mustard #aampanna #cuisine #kolkatacuisine #hyderabad #hyderabadifood #hyderabadrestaurants #ohcalcutta

Bengali cuisine is often written off as just an extensive list of fish preparations. Although, there is no denying that some of the best dishes out of this land is the fish based, the most popular being bhapa ilish– where slices of hilsa – are seemed in a bed of mustard and spices wrapped in gourd leaves. If you love fish, this is a dish that will blow you mind right off and pull you back to it over and over again. The pungent spices compliment (and tone down) the strong characteristic smell of hilsa and the resulting dish tantalises the taste buds and makes a place in your heart right from the first bite.

However, there is an extensive list of vegetarian Bengali dishes that will render a vegetarian spoilt for choice. Aloo posto (potato with poppy seeds), mocha ghonto (a dry curry with banana flowers), and aloo dum (potatoes in thick spicy gravy) and some of the many unforgettable vegetarian dishes that deserve to be tried at least once.
